Methyl Mercury in the Environment caused by dental mercury amalgam!

Latest research published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology   March 12, 2008, demonstrates that dental surgeries are a major sourccee of envrionmental polution with mercury. Not only did they demonstrate that waste water form dental surgeries contributes significantly to the environmental burden of mercury, but also that this mercury is acted upn by bacteria in the pipes to produce the readily absorbable neurotoxic form of methyl-mercury.

The researchers stated:

“We found the highest levels of methyl mercury ever reported in any environmental water sample,”

“It appears to be produced partially, if not fully, in the waste water, and it’s being produced very rapidly,”

This makes the reassurances of the dental associations, that dentistry is only a minor contributor of mercury to the environment, an insult to intelligence.

"Based on their sample studies, the researchers estimate that 2-5 kilograms, or up to 11 pounds, of methyl mercury could be entering the public water supply of the United States each year from dental waste water. While this may not seem like much, methyl mercury is highly toxic in minute amounts."
